FORTNITE OFFICIAL 2019 Calendar Epic Games Books Reviews

  • Came in perfect shape 😁 corners sharp and no bends
  • Great calendar! Kids love fortnite & parents like the small memo field next to each day for notes or events by day for whole family to see.
  • Xmas calendars every year! Fortnite best out Overwatch this year..lol! Kids loved how the calendars were long and different other than the same old square calendar.
  • I got this for my 11 year old and he loves it! He loves changing month to month to see what is next)
  • Not a typical printed calendar. Days are listed vertically.
  • It's a calendar and it's that game that all 8 year old love so much.
  • My son loves it. The days go lengthwise in the calendar rather than the normal format, but there is plenty of room to write in things on the days
  • Purchased as a gift. My Grandson was thrilled.

The Mamba Mentality How I Play eBook Kobe Bryant Pau Gasol Phil Jackson Andrew D Bernstein Reviews

  • I've read all 26 reviews so far and I must say that every review is right on the money. I personally was looking forward to a more in-depth psychological look into the mind of Kobe as well as how he trains in the off-season and during the season. Unfortunately this book doesn't give you that. A lot of people called this a coffee book and that's what it is. Now, that's not a bad thing. Pictures are great and the stories are short and to the point to keep anyone interested. However, as a Kobe fan I wanted more 'Detail'.
  • This book is not a lap book, its a book you read at a table. ( pic included to compare size) also, this book is a picture book with a paragraph describing the photo. Theres a picture on every page. Its not a normal book like id thought it be.
  • Not what I expected. I was expecting a fairly in-depth look at Kobes psychological strengths and habits, but it proved to be more of a picture book explaining the story of Kobe Bryant and what he did on his road to success. With that said, there are a few interesting concepts I enjoyed reading.
I guess I expected this book to be a Kobe Bryant but instead got a guy throwing a bottle into the trash and yelling "Kobe!" While shooting a fadeaway.
  • Mamba Mentality
    Review

This is not a typical biography. This is Kobe Bean Bryant talking about experiences albeit good or bad, that shaped his career. The book displays his passion and knowledge for the game. Kobe divulges to you technically/logically. Not persuasive.

It is clearly written, accessable and informative.

Kobe achieved his goal by giving off a broad view of Mamba Mentality that anyone can understand. He fell short in giving die hard fans more to sink their teeth into. For instance he once said to beat Iverson "I studied sharks" this was left out. Interesting concept.

Another example of falling short was not enough literature. Pictures galore. Lastly I want to know what made him Mamba. It's like Batman to dark Knight. Something changed...tell us!!!!!

Compared to similar books this has better photography. Thanks to Andrew Bernstein.

His personal experiences were throughout the book. However some stories could of been expanded. For instance he played with magic...I would like to know how the game went.

I LIKE the pictures and variety of players he matched. All Stars*

I LEAST liked the lack of details and pages. It didn't inspire

I could relate because I'm competitive.... When it's something I want.

I'd recommend. Tho 35 is a bit much. 30 would of been better. Hard copy is best.

A fan of Kobe or lover of NBA legends would buy this. A person who wants to know what competitive edge is should check it out.
  • If you're a holistic basketball enthusiast or die hard Kobe Bryant fan, this is the coffee table book for you! You know what Kobe is about and the book perfectly represents his passion for basketball and his meticulous study of his craft.
As a basketball enthusiast or die hard Kobe fan, you'd appreciate the official Kobe perspective on VIPs in his career and the(/select) thought process behind his approach.

    But let me clarify....

Despite the title, what this book is NOT

    1. A step by step guide on "Mamba Mentality" aka "How to THINK like Kobe"--if you are a true Kobe (or Jordan fan) for that matter, you know that his level of competitiveness is innate and if you want the inner workings to that, the closest book to it is "Relentless" by Tim Grover (...MJ's trainer)

    2. a reference guide to Kobe's mental, fitness and basketball prep--no, this isn't going to be like Tom Brady's TB12 nutrition manual nor Arnold Schwarzenegger's "The Encyclopedia of Modern Body Building" that details what you need to do to physically and nutritionally be at the top

    3. an autobiography on Kobe's life--again, coffee table book w/personally selected thoughts on his basketball career

    4. a Bible on all things Kobe-- while some coffee table books aim to include all the minutiae a super fan would want , this is not where you are going to find pictures of every single shoe he has worn nor every commercial he has been a part of

"But, but the book mentions 'Mamba Mentality'"....well if you are a Kobe fan, you'd know that it takes more than one book ("magic bullet") to encompass the Mamba Mentality. If anything, the Mamba Mentality is about having incredible self awareness, the willingness to outwork and outstudy everyone else and putting the awareness and willingness into action all the time. It's not that the book is without "Mamba Mentality" but rather it covers the essence of it 100% of the time. He gives you select insight into his thought process on playing against other top players, thoughts/memoirs on people that have inspired him and if anything, the clear notion that he is not going to hand hold any reader on "Mamba Mentality" just because they bought his book.

" I was hoping for a Kobe Bible"....I will have to admit, I would have wanted that too but I have to be upfront that this is not the scope of this book (some other super fan who wants to monetize it can write that book) and from a business perspective, I am sure he realizes that he could sell more than one book about himself. People certainly buy different versions of his basketball shoes, even if one model would suffice for the average joe.

That said, if there is one printed object that encapsulates who the public know as "Kobe Bryant"....this is the book. This is the Kobe book you'd put in a time capsule and share with future (basketball fan) generations.
  • The book was not a very good read, it became boring very quickly. I expected it to be motivating, insight to
struggles that made him a better person. If your in the 5th grade and want to read about basketball this is your book. Waste of money, very disappointed.
  • More in depth than a coffee table book. I thought it would just be pictures from a famous photographer. It had that, but also commentary on every picture from Kobe. It will take a couple of nights to get through it all. He has some great words of wisdom.
  • I loved this book, and although some people say it’s just a scouting report with pictures, I think it’s much more. I think there are nuances to excellence that make succeeding less mystical and more attainable for average people like myself. I used to think Kobe was this brilliant basketball genius who could dunk on anyone, someone with supreme talent... but after reading about how he scouted his opponents, their tendencies, their rhythms, and how it gave him the edge to know how they wanted to block him... I think it makes work ethic and preparation more glamorous. It gives me confidence in applying the mamba mentality to parts of my life. <3 Kobe.

A former international hostage negotiator for the FBI offers a new, field-tested approach to high-stakes negotiations—whether in the boardroom or at home.

After a stint policing the rough streets of Kansas City, Missouri, Chris Voss joined the FBI, where his career as a hostage negotiator brought him face-to-face with a range of criminals, including bank robbers and terrorists. Reaching the pinnacle of his profession, he became the FBI’s lead international kidnapping negotiator. Never Split the Difference takes you inside the world of high-stakes negotiations and into Voss’s head, revealing the skills that helped him and his colleagues succeed where it mattered most saving lives. In this practical guide, he shares the nine effective principles—counterintuitive tactics and strategies—you too can use to become more persuasive in both your professional and personal life.

Life is a series of negotiations you should be prepared for buying a car, negotiating a salary, buying a home, renegotiating rent, deliberating with your partner. Taking emotional intelligence and intuition to the next level, Never Split the Difference gives you the competitive edge in any discussion.

Ebook Never Split the Difference Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It eBook Chris Voss Tahl Raz

"My guess is around 70% of my purchases are made on Amazon: it's a lot of stuff, both for home and for my company. This is the first item (across all categories) that I've written a review for. I'm compelled because this book has changed my life, and I suspect it can change yours — What do you have to lose by reading it?

I thought I’d learned what I needed to know about negotiation. I went to a prestigious business school and took their negotiation class, learning all about Getting Yes, BATNA, and other fancy acronyms. I’d also had to bargain my share in both work and personal life. Yet, I felt like the tools I’d been given were meant for some alternate reality where people are totally dispassionate, rational robots, doing math in their heads to get to logical outcomes. The negotiations I’d been in with were instead with passionate, irrational (including myself) humans, sometimes getting angry or sad, often making decisions that didn’t “make any sense” (to me). I was pretty sure the negotiation outcomes we were getting to were subpar, both for me and for them: a lot of splitting the difference, mostly to make the negotiations — which felt uncomfortable for all parties — stop.

Note, when I mean “negotiation”, I’m speaking pretty broadly: from “negotiating" with my fiancée on who should walk the dog tonight, to negotiating with an employee on why this feature needed to be built urgently, to negotiating with an angry customer who’d called me angry about something, to negotiating with my parents on wedding plans, the list goes on. Each negotiation tougher and more emotional than the next, yet with tools that told me emotions didn’t matter. Huh?

I don’t remember how I came across Never Split the Difference, but man, am I glad I did. The book exposed me to a whole different way of negotiating, questioning the rational toolkit I’d been given in business school and replacing it with a more human set of tools. This set based on psychology and understanding of normal human emotions. It builds on empathy and active listening skills, layers on ways to label emotions and ask open-ended calibrated questions. It includes polite ways to say “no” without offending the other party, and many more. Most importantly it builds a framework that lets you deeply understand what the other party needs, wants, and desires, and work with them to achieve an outcome where you get your goals met — without ever “splitting the difference” again.

And it has worked wonders. Since reading this book, I have:
- Forged a better relationship with my fiancée by actively listening to her before jointly finding solutions
- Negotiated successful resolutions to emotionally charged topics with parents and friends
- Brought angry customers — who felt we had failed them — back from the brink to trusting us again
- Forged a better relationship with my business partners by understanding how they value time, silence, relationships, surprises, etc…
- Gotten discounts on things that I didn’t think could be discounted, just by using my name
- Gotten to the front of the waiting line at busy restaurants
- Said no to bad deals, because no deal is better than a bad one
- the list goes on.

I warn you that this book is the start of a rabbit hole that you might want to keep digging down. I’ve recommended this book to anyone who will listen, personally bought it 29 times as a gift for friends & coworkers alike, taken an online class (taught by the author’s son, a brilliant negotiator in his own right), etc...

Negotiation, in the broadest sense as described above, is something I want to become an expert in, because I now understand that every conversation is a negotiation. This is likely the most useful skill you can learn and apply.

It all started with this book. Are you too busy to read it?"

Mini celebrates 60 amazing years of this iconic car, from its revolutionary introduction to the popularity of its new-generation models.

The first two-door Mini, introduced in 1959 and built until 2000, revolutionized automotive design with its innovative front-wheel-drive layout that made the car appear bigger on the inside than the outside. In 1999, the Mini was voted the second most influential car of the 20th century, behind the Ford Model T.

Designed for British Motor Corporation (BMC) by Sir Alec Issigonis and manufactured in England, Australia, Spain, Belgium, Chile, Italy, Portugal, South Africa, Uruguay, Venezuela, and Yugoslavia, the Mini was as successful in competition as it was on the street, winning the Monte Carlo Rally four times from 1964 through 1967.

Originally built by BMC, the Mini's later parent company, Rover, was acquired by BMW in 1994. In 2000, BMW sold most of the Rover Group but retained the Mini brand. The last and 5,387,862nd original Mini rolled off the production line in October, 2000. In July 2001, BMW launched production of the new-generation of Mini which was soon joined by Countryman, Clubman, convertible, Cooper Works, and numerous special editions. Nearly 20 years later, the new Minis remain as popular as the original from 1959.

American Moonshot John F Kennedy and the Great Space Race Douglas Brinkley Books Reviews

  • This book has the following fact errors, among many others

Page 147 “Television cameras carried images [of the Vanguard TV-3 launch] nationwide on CBS and NBC, beginning a tradition of live coverage for rocket launches that would last into the 1970s…” and “…with millions watching as the Vanguard TV-3 took off…” There was no TV coverage of this launch; the first live TV coverage of a launch was October 11, 1958.

Page 157 “Measuring just 6.4 inches in diameter, Explorer wasn’t very sophisticated or large—Nikita Khrushchev famously derided it as the ‘grapefruit satellite’...” Khrushchev, however, was referring to Vanguard 1, launched March 17, 1958. Explorer was 6.4 inches in diameter, but also more than six feet long.

Page 182 “…as Administrator Keith Glennan addressed a packed press briefing, a curtain was pulled open, revealing the seven astronauts…” There was no curtain.

Page 202 “…Echo 1 functioned as a kind of orbital mirror, bouncing radio-television beams off the Earth’s surface…” First, radio waves were bounced off of Echo, not the Earth’s surface. Second, it only was tested using radio signals and voice, but no television or video.

Page 204 Caption First, this photo is not from the October 21st Kennedy-Nixon debate, but rather from the September 25th debate; second, three of the four debates were in October, not all four as the caption states.

Page 211 “Five generations of rockets—starting with the early Vanguard, and then onward with ICBMs like Atlas, were born in the Eisenhower years...” Redstone (1950), Atlas (1953), Jupiter (1954) and Thor (Jan. 1957) all preceded Vanguard (Oct. 1957).

Page 211 “There were all sorts of weather satellites...” The only type of weather satellite at the time was the TIROS series; three (which only had different cameras) had been launched.

Page 240 “Seeing that capsule [Freedom 7] land in the Atlantic was one of the greatest thrills of Kennedy’s life.” This would not have been possible, as there was no live TV coverage of Shepard's recovery.

Page 241 “Kennedy played host to Shepard for the rest of that day…” They were only together until 11 am.

Page 242 A Shepard quote about Kennedy is said to refer their conversation at the White House, but actually refers to his post-flight phone call from the president.

Page 246 A photo from Kennedy’s first State of the Union speech in January is wrongly identified as from his May 25 speech to Congress.

Page 264 A photo from Kennedy’s October 1962 visit to Cape Canaveral is wrongly identified as being in Huntsville.

Photo page 11 Full-page color photo identified as Gordon Cooper aboard Faith 7. The photo is actually of a mannequin in a Gemini spacecraft.

Page 283 “Back in 1957, when JFK was deriding failed Vanguard launches…” On page 145, however, it states that “Kennedy didn’t comment on” the only Vanguard launch attempt that year (December).

Page 285 “[FDR’s fireside chats] between 1933 and 1945…” They ended in June 1944.

Page 296 “...a specially enlarged airplane, known as the ‘Super Guppy,’ to carry the third stage...”. This first aircraft was the Pregnant Guppy; the Super Guppy did not enter service until 1965.

Page 300 “Other scientific evidence collected by NASA during the Kennedy years proved that Mars [was a dead planet].” The first US Mars probe was launched in 1964 and returned data in 1965.

Page 326 “Later that day, at a White House Rose Garden ceremony...” (followed by a Kennedy quote) and “the president said with Glenn by his side.” First, there was no Rose Garden ceremony that day (it was rainy); and second, the quote is from Kennedy’s comments to the media on February 20th.

Page 336 “…the three-stage Saturn V rocket would stand 363 feet taller than the Statue of Liberty.” It was 58 feet taller; the Saturn itself was 363 feet tall.

Page 380 “Schirra reported back to Mercury Control everything he did or encountered, his voice relayed via the Telstar satellite to TV and radio audiences around the world.” Telstar only relayed a videotape playback of the launch to Britain and France, not coverage of the mission; nor around the world.

Page 402 “In early May, the president made a return visit to Huntsville for an earthshaking static firing of a Saturn booster stage.” The firing took place during his September 11, 1962 visit.

Page 405 “Pointing to his Oval Office rocking chair...” and “…their informal Oval Office chat...” This meeting was in the Yellow Oval Room on the second floor of the White House.

Page 412 Caption states November 18; this is actually November 16. Caption also refers to "USS Observational Island"; correct name is Observation Island.

Page 437 “As for the law firm orchestrating the construction of the Manned Spacecraft Center, it was, no surprise —Brown and Root...” Brown and Root was an industrial services contractor, not a law firm.

Page 441 “While Glenn lost in 1964, he eventually ended up serving in the Senate...” Glenn withdrew from his Senate race in 1964; he lost his primary in 1970.

Page 443 “...Gemini VIII in 1965...” Gemini VIII was in 1966.

Page 447 Caption refers to Apollo 11’s “mobile launch platform” instead of correct name, “mobile launcher.” The date (“May 17”) is incorrect; rollout was May 20.

Page 452 “Grissom was buried…not far from [Kennedy’s] eternal flame…” Grissom’s gravesite is more than half-a-mile to the south.

Page 452 “Only in late 1967, when the Soviets’ N1 rocket blew up on the pad, killing Russian engineers and designers, did the Kremlin stop competing.” First, the N1 pad explosion was in 1969; second, no fatalities were reported; and third, the N1 program continued into early 1974.

Page 458 References LM’s “descent engines” (plural). The LM had a single descent engine.
  • Fun to read history of my time as I grew to adulthood. It was a family adventure. BTW...Leroy Gordon Cooper was born and raised in a Shawnee Oklahoma. Not California as indicated on pg 403.
  • Though the release of this book is timed to coincide with the forthcoming 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, it is in reality a Presidential biography of John F. Kennedy through the lens of the space race of the 1950s and 60s. It brilliantly places JFK in the time, place and context of an era where American achievement and prestige on the world stage is in question following early Soviet technological triumphs.

This book pulls back the curtain using archival sources - including JFK's hidden tape recording system installed in the White House - to reveal his deliberative processes that ultimately led him to make his bold declaration in 1961 of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth. In this day and age, when elected officials make grandiose promises which remain unfulfilled and thus ultimately ring hollow in our ears virtually before the politician is finished speaking, it is startling to read how JFK's summons to the moon galvanized America's citizens, its government leaders, and, most importantly, its budget appropriators into sustained action in single-minded pursuit of that goal.

Characters of the era vividly come to life as flesh-and-blood humans, including the Mercury 7 astronauts, the early, fabled leaders of NASA, Lyndon Johnson and others. But brought most vividly to life were JFK and Wernher von Braun, probably the two most central figures in the audacious goal of a lunar landing before the end of the 1960s. Fortunately, Mr. Brinkley, though clearly editorializing, does not flinch from properly characterizing von Braun's contribution to manned spaceflight in the larger context of his Nazi past and complicity in war crimes, reminding us that the man was no hero. Kennedy, on the other hand, is revealed as the thoughtful, deliberate, highly intelligent, galvanizing leader he was. Even though we all know how JFK's story ended, when we are met with his sudden and violent death on a Dallas street, you feel a personal sense of loss that a great mind and inspiring leader was removed from the scene in such a ignominious manner; this book makes you yearn for what else might have come from this brilliant man who was taken from us at only 46.

The Apollo program and the 1969 moon landing are rather quickly wrapped up in an epilogue after JFK's death, so if you are looking for a history of the Apollo program, this isn't it, but nor was it meant to be. This book brilliantly reminds us of JFK's rightful place in space history as the driving force and inspiration for one of mankind's greatest adventures, and makes it clear that if anyone other than Kennedy had been president in the first years of the 1960s, our history would have turned out very differently, proving that the character and wisdom of the person in the Oval Office truly matters.

I highly recommend this book and enjoyed it thoroughly.
  • This was a good review of Kennedy's involvement in the space race. Only covers the Kennedy years but a lot of background information I was previously unaware of. Recommended.
  • Dr. Brinkley puts a well thought out and captivating story about an era that ends in triumph and not tragedy like most events in history. It was fascinating to read about how women were also physically and mentally tested to become astronauts and compared to their male counterparts. These women, who were called the Mercury 13, were part of the many unsung heroes in our race to the moon. The book also challenges the reader and society to wonder What will be the next moonshot?....What leader or event will unite societies to bring about a triumph in today’s age?”
  • According to , American Moonshot John F. Kennedy and the Great Space is WhisperSync capable. I purchased the audible version with it, only to find its not whispersync’d.
  • This is a fantastic read. The idea of a “moonshot” project - a bipartisan push for a shared and worthy goal - is a vivid reminder of what a united America can accomplish as a nation in such a circumstance. Brinkley’s book begs the question of whether we will be able to do it again, and to what end. Looking at the obstacles that had to be overcome some 50 years ago - detailed superbly in the book - against the backdrop of current events, one has to wonder. But the book reveals enough of a blueprint and showcases the type of human optimism that certainly still exists to let the reader contemplate the next great moonshot.

What is the secret of talent? How do we unlock it? In this groundbreaking work, journalist and New York Times bestselling author Daniel Coyle provides parents, teachers, coaches, businesspeople—and everyone else—with tools they can use to maximize potential in themselves and others.

Whether you’re coaching soccer or teaching a child to play the piano, writing a novel or trying to improve your golf swing, this revolutionary book shows you how to grow talent by tapping into a newly discovered brain mechanism.

Drawing on cutting-edge neurology and firsthand research gathered on journeys to nine of the world’s talent hotbeds—from the baseball fields of the Caribbean to a classical-music academy in upstate New York—Coyle identifies the three key elements that will allow you to develop your gifts and optimize your performance in sports, art, music, math, or just about anything.

• Deep Practice--Everyone knows that practice is a key to success. What everyone doesn’t know is that specific kinds of practice can increase skill up to ten times faster than conventional practice.

• Ignition--We all need a little motivation to get started. But what separates truly high achievers from the rest of the pack? A higher level of commitment—call it passion—born out of our deepest unconscious desires and triggered by certain primal cues. Understanding how these signals work can help you ignite passion and catalyze skill development.

• Master Coaching--What are the secrets of the world’s most effective teachers, trainers, and coaches? Discover the four virtues that enable these “talent whisperers” to fuel passion, inspire deep practice, and bring out the best in their students.

These three elements work together within your brain to form myelin, a microscopic neural substance that adds vast amounts of speed and accuracy to your movements and thoughts. Scientists have discovered that myelin might just be the holy grail the foundation of all forms of greatness, from Michelangelo’s to Michael Jordan’s. The good news about myelin is that it isn’t fixed at birth; to the contrary, it grows, and like anything that grows, it can be cultivated and nourished.

Combining revelatory analysis with illuminating examples of regular people who have achieved greatness, this book will not only change the way you think about talent, but equip you to reach your own highest potential.

"Coyle brings an empowering, exciting message to us: that we can grow our own greatness. That our skills are not fixed; they're not inherited or inherent inside of our DNA. I can't help but wish my parents had known the concepts of this book when I struggled with my baseball swing in 8th grade. But, I'm thankful to have this message known to me as a 31-year old -- both for my own growth of talent, and for how I will raise my future children.

After writing a draft of this glowing review, I decided to read the most helpful critical review of the book, as penned by Ronald Forbes. In many ways, his review was accurate, and also somewhat persuasive. In light of his review, I have tempered my own review and rating, down from 5 stars to 4 stars. To summarize, Forbes rightly points out that Coyle's book is more "pop journalism" (which I have no problem with...it helps keep this book interesting, and from being bogged down in scientific jargon), and he says the book's claims are nothing new. But if an author can present old ideas in a fresh way that can help us change our behaviors, then he should be commended for it!

This is the kind of book that you cannot help telling your friends and family about. Over the several weeks during which I read this book, I brought aspects of the book up in at least half a dozen conversations. It's a fun book. And you learn a lot.

I'm not skilled in science, so I'm not going to try to summarize what the heck myelin is. Basically, it's stuff in your brain that grows as you develop skill in ANY given area of life. So, Coyle tries to help us explain how to grow more myelin in our brains.

Coyle's three keys to growing talent:

1) Deep Practice - when I go out and play 18 holes, this is about as far from deep practice as you can get. Why? Because deep practice is all about fixing mistakes. You can do that on the driving range or the putting green, but not on the course (well, not easily, anyway). Think about it: how much time does the average golfer spend playing vs. practicing? 5-to-1? 10-to-1? Or any other sport or skill, for that matter.

The concept of deep practice is not about practicing for countless hours each day; instead, most of the talent hotbeds profiled in the book had pupils training less than e hours per day. But the 3 hours of practice at these hotbeds has exponentially greater yield than regular practice.

Deep practice is about struggling to get better. When we have to grapple with a weakness in our game, we can get to a point of breakthrough. "Experts practice differently and more strategically. When they fail, they don't blame it on luck or themselves. They have a strategy they can fix." (p 86).

2) Ignition - at some point in each of our lives, we watch a friend or colleague shoot to the moon (in some specific area of life or work), and we wonder, "how did he do that?" What switch was flipped in his brain? When we see it happen to someone just like us, it gives a sense that we could acquire that particular talent, whether it be a tennis swing, an ability to remodel a home, or learn to play the violin.

Coyle writes, "Ignition is about the set of signals and subconscious forces that create our identity; the moments that lead us to say that is who I want to be." He looks all over the globe to study how talent hotbeds were ignited: South Korean female golfers, Russian tennis players, Brazilian soccer players, Curaçaon baseball players, to a charter school that started in Houston. These are great stories; fun to share with friends.

3) Master Coaching - this doesn't mean you need some expensive, elite, impossible-to-access, famous coach. Nope, you just need a coach that has loads of experience, plenty of passion, and a knack for connecting interpersonally with his students.

"Master coaches aren't like heads of state. Their personality--their core skill circuit--is to be more like farmers: careful, deliberate cultivators of myelin." (165)

My 3 greatest takeaways from the book:

1) Praise your children for their hard work, not for their intelligence or their innate abilities. If they make the connection between hard work and increasing skill, they will be increasingly motivated to work hard, which therefore leads to more talent. An upward cycle, if you will.
2) Savor the struggle. When my slice is really acting up on the golf course, view it as a mountain to be conquered. Zone in and do whatever it takes to correct that circuitry.
3) Don't complain and envy those with more talent than me. Instead, use it as motivation and say, "If he can do it, so can I.""

The Talent Code Greatness Isn't Born It Grown Here How Daniel Coyle 8580001044958 Books Reviews

  • This brilliantly written book is one of the most impactful I have read this year. Author Daniel Coyle has done an outstanding job of taking research into myelin, a substance that insulates nerve cells, and turning that scientific breakthrough knowledge into a prescription for achieving greatness in a variety of fields, from music to athletics to business.

Using powerful case studies, Coyle has identified three distinct key elements that determine how individuals achieve greatness Deep Practice, Ignition, and Master Coaching.

Deep Practice involves short burst of energy - perfecting, identifying errors, repeating. Each time an individual - violinist, tennis player, soccer player - engages in this kind of Deep Practice, the nervous system generates new layers of myelin to further insulate and streamline the flow of electrical energy within neural synapses.

In order for an individual to have the motivation, persistence, and determination to engage in this level of Deep Practice, there needs to have been an Ignition event. In the case of Korean women who now dominate the LPGA, the igniting event was Se Ri Pak winning the McDonald's LPGA Championship in 1998, and becoming a visible symbol and role model for young Korean girls. Five years later - enough time for Deep Practice to have made a significant difference - Korean women began to dominate women's golf.

The third key element is Master Coaching.. Mr. Coyle calls these master teachers "The Talent Whisperers." Common traits are patience, nurturing spirit and the ability to use years of observation and pattern recognition to know just the right word to say to encourage and motivate the person being coached. IConic UCLA coach John Wooden is cited as a prototype for this kind of Master Coach.

The implications of these three key elements that lead to greatness are far reaching. They can be applied to the realm of parenting, teaching, coaching, and business leadership. This is a MUST READ book for anyone who aspires to greatness or to lead others in achieving greatness.
  • Coyle brings an empowering, exciting message to us that we can grow our own greatness. That our skills are not fixed; they're not inherited or inherent inside of our DNA. What switch was flipped in his brain? When we see it happen to someone just like us, it gives a sense that we could acquire that particular talent, whether it be a tennis swing, an ability to remodel a home, or learn to play the violin.

Coyle writes, "Ignition is about the set of signals and subconscious forces that create our identity; the moments that lead us to say that is who I want to be." He looks all over the globe to study how talent hotbeds were ignited South Korean female golfers, Russian tennis players, Brazilian soccer players, Curaçaon baseball players, to a charter school that started in Houston.

Their personality--their core skill circuit--is to be more like farmers careful, deliberate cultivators of myelin." (165)

My 3 greatest takeaways from the book

    1) Praise your children for their hard work, not for their intelligence or their innate abilities. If they make the connection between hard work and increasing skill, they will be increasingly motivated to work hard, which therefore leads to more talent. An upward cycle, if you will.
    2) Savor the struggle. When my slice is really acting up on the golf course, view it as a mountain to be conquered. Zone in and do whatever it takes to correct that circuitry.
    3) Don't complain and envy those with more talent than me. Instead, use it as motivation and say, "If he can do it, so can I."
  • Anyone who's read any Malcolm Gladwell book will recognize the narrative strategy (seemingly diverse vignettes illustrating different steps in an allegedly unified process), but author Coyle makes it more than a rip-off by using his breezy charm to skate through each anecdote before it gets preachy or overstays its welcome. Any reader who (like me) is in the teaching or coaching field will come away with some new approaches to consider. Special note for football fans there is a brief JaMarcus Russell section that aged hilariously, though that's not the author's fault.
