The diaries of a remarkable young woman who was determined to live a meaningful and happy life despite her struggle with cystic fibrosis and a rare superbug—from age fifteen to her death at the age of twenty-five

“Captures the heartbreaking beauty of being alive.”—Beck Dorey-Stein, New York Times bestselling author of From the Corner of the Oval

Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at the age of three, Mallory Smith grew up to be a determined, talented young woman who inspired others even as she privately raged against her illness. Despite the daily challenges of endless medical treatments and a deep understanding that she’d never lead a normal life, Mallory was determined to “Live Happy,” a mantra she followed until her death. Mallory worked hard to make the most out of the limited time she had, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University, becoming a cystic fibrosis advocate well known in the CF community, and embarking on a career as a professional writer. Along the way, she cultivated countless intimate friendships and ultimately found love.

For more than ten years, Mallory recorded her thoughts and observations about struggles and feelings too personal to share during her life, leaving instructions for her mother to publish her work posthumously. She hoped that her writing would offer insight to those living with, or loving someone with, chronic illness.

What emerges is a powerful and inspiring portrait of a brave young woman and blossoming writer who did not allow herself to be defined by disease. Her words offer comfort and hope to readers, even as she herself was facing death. Salt in My Soul is a beautifully crafted, intimate, and poignant tribute to a short life well lived—and a call for all of us to embrace our own lives as fully as possible.

Advance praise for Salt in My Soul

“This is a deeply moving book full of wisdom about health, life, and love—and about the importance of finding happiness wherever and whenever we can. It broke my heart but also inspired me to make the most of every day.”—Will Schwalbe, New York Times bestselling author of The End of Your Life Book Club

“A beautiful, brave, unsparingly insightful account of a courageous girl who becomes a woman warrior and fights for her life while living it fully.”—Eric Lax, author of The Mold in Dr. Florey’s Coat

"Shivers. I get them from cold. But I also experience them with some frequency as the pages and chapters in this book reflect on a unique, beyond courageous, and compelling life's journey like no other.
A Phi Beta Kappa graduate from Stanford, a double lung transplant recipient, an age three acknowledged owner of cystic fibrosis which will later combine with a diagnosed hidden superbug, was just one person whose indominable silhouette would evolve into a warrior of tenacious survival determination.
But, alas, forces of destiny took away the breath and heartbeat of a courageous member of humanity's fastidious empire. The memory of Mallory Smith is one of life and love inherent within a heart where flesh and spirit may at times be divergent."

  • "My hope is that my writing will offer insight for people living with, or loving someone with, chronic disease". You have gone beyond your hopes. I am a mother who lost my child to cancer 3 months before you left this world. Her name is Talia - so you can imagine my surprise when I read Part One and each time your friends name came up in the book. Your story of life with the disease allowed me to peak into the mind of my own child through you. I thank-you for that from the bottom of my heart ! May your voice be heard by many . " We are the writers of our own story. That our story will someday end is inevitable for all of us, but the way we get there is not".
  • I stayed up all night reading ‘Salt in my Soul’ because I couldn’t put it down. I simultaneously laughed while also ugly crying. As a CF and post-lung transplant patient myself who also has B. cepacia so many things Mallory articulated I could relate with so much. It breaks my heart that she is no longer on this Earth because the world was so much brighter with her in it. Mallory was simply brilliant. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy.
  • Mal was able to write so beautifully about the impossibly hard things that she was going through. The way she was able to communicate her outlook on life and love, family. Her brilliance shone through every page. I think especially having known her, and seen her be such an unbelievable person, but not fully knowing everything she was going through ‘behind the scenes’, just proves how strong and special she was. I think this book is going to help a lot of people
  • This book is about so many things, most especially life, love, friendship and heartache.
    It's about Living Happy.
Mallory's writing style flows with such ease, while gripping the reader making you unable to put the book down!
I did not know Mallory, but reading this book gives me the privilege of reading her story; the story of an unbelievably strong, articulate, smart and beautiful young woman.
This is a book everyone should read!
  • Demonstrating wisdom and writing far beyond her years, Mallory asks and attempts to answer all the big questions that connect us regarding mortality, existence, and purpose. While the origin of Mal's story revolves around the implications of living with a chronic illness ,cystic fibrosis, she also touches on coming-of-age issues with a poetic-esque prose and full transparency of her own experience. This is a must-read for anyone looking to gain important, life-changing perspective on what we may find while facing tremendous obstacles. I read it while I was in the hospital and can honestly say Mallory gave me the strength to persevere.
  • No sugar coating in this book - it’s real and raw! A crystal clear view through the lens of Mallory Smith, a hopeful, positive, multifaceted young lady who exemplifies what living life is all about. Relatable to “everyone making their own way and everyone facing different struggles that others aren’t aware of.” She has opened my eyes to things I never saw before.
  • Shivers.

  • As an adult living with cystic fibrosis, I am finding her young voice amazing and wise beyond her years. I have cried, laughed, and LEARNED reading Mallory's words. She has reminded me of what's important, and that we all have our struggles. A beautiful, real, reflection on an unfinished life. I plan to ask those closest to me to read this, I often feel they don't get cystic fibrosis. Every time I go to Stanford I shall remember Mallory.
